Languages

You can find this section under Languages > Languages in the IRP Admin left navigation menu.

You use the languages section to define how many languages are active on your IRP website. There are 124 languages in the system — many of these are irrelevant for most companies’ ecommerce purposes. At least one language must be active. The default active language is English. English will be used if no translations are available for Small Translations or Large Translations.

If you mark a language as active, a customer can select this language to view the website. Even when a language is active you still need to carry out some work for all the information to be seen in that language. You need to translate the product data (e.g., Category Names, Product Descriptions, etc.) , information (Terms and Conditions, About Us, etc.) and website data (smaller snippets of information) into that language.

The main Languages.aspx page appears as follows:

IRP Admin image

This shows the following information:

  • ISO: This is the standard ISO symbol for the country. The browser passes this over and the site will automatically select this if it is active.
  • Active: Whether the language is active and will show the site in that language.
  • Translatable: Whether the language is translatable in IRP Admin.
  • Display Order: The order in which this language will be displayed in relation to others on the front-end of the website.
  • Language: The name of the language.
  • Sales Last 30 Days: Sales in that language in the last 30 Days.
  • Sales All Time: All Time Sales in that language.

How To Add a Language Dialect (e.g. US English)

To add a language dialect such as US English or Brazilian Portuguese, you follow the same steps as described in How To Add or Edit a Language, however in addition to entering the correct ISO 639-1 code for the ‘Language ISO’ setting, it is vital that you enter the correct value for the Full Language ISO setting. This should be the exact full culture code for the dialect, for example:

  • US English: set ‘Full Language ISO’ to en-us
  • Brazilian Portuguese: set ‘Full Language ISO’ to pt-br

Note also that, when you are configuring a language dialect, the 'Language ISO' two-letter codes must be unique. For example, for US English, you should set 'en-US' as the Full Language ISO against a 'Language ISO' of 'us' (not 'en') as this means that when the full 'en-US' is seen as the browser language, 'us' is selected instead of 'en' as it would normally.

If you make these changes, you will also want to update the ‘Spoken Languages’ in the Shipping Countries that speak this dialect of the language as opposed to the generic one. For example you could:

  • Replace ‘English’ in the ‘Spoken Languages’ section of the United States configuration with ‘US English’
  • Replace ‘Portuguese’ in the ‘Spoken Languages’ section of the Brazil configuration with ‘Brazilian Portuguese’
