Mobile Detection Strings

To add mobile detection strings, follow these steps:

1. Go to Server Management > Mobile Detection Strings in the IRP Admin left navigation menu.
2. To add a Mobile Detection String, click the Add New Mobile Detection String button above the Search bar.
   To edit an existing Mobile Detection String, click the Edit button on the right side of the row belonging to the string that you want to edit.
   The MobileDetectionStringEdit.aspx page appears.
3. Complete the following details.

   Setting	Description
   Detection String ID	This is the database ID associated with this detection string.
   Detection Type	This defines the element of mobile device detection that this regular expression will be used to pick up. Example 1: ‘Phone’ will mean that this string will be tested when the device detection functionality is trying to determine if the device is a mobile phone. Example 2: ‘Operating System’ will mean that this string will be tested when the device detection functionality is trying to determine what operating system the current device is running.
   Type Name	This is the friendly name given to the detected value when it matches this string. Example 1: A detection type of ‘Phone’ and a Type Name of ‘iPhone’ would indicate that, when matched, the device is an Apple iPhone. Example 2: A detection type of ‘Browser’ and a Type Name of ‘Chrome’ would indicate that, when matched, this device is running a version of Google’s Chrome browser.
   Regular Expression	The regular expression is what the detection module will test the User Agent string of the device against to see if it is a match for whatever you are trying to detect. For example, if you were trying to detect an operating system for any iOS device, you could use a regular expression such as “iPhone|iOS|iPad|iPod”. NOTE: These are generally quite long and complicated depending on the type and number of devices matching this type. You should edit these only if you are confident that you know what you are doing. If a new device is released and you can’t wait for the next update of your provider’s data, you can edit the associated string.

4. Click the Insert Detection String button or the Update Detection String button to save the details.

To bulk update mobile detection strings, follow these steps:

1. Go to Server Management > Mobile Detection Strings in the IRP Admin left navigation menu.
   
2. Click the Bulk Update button above the Search bar.
   The MobileDetectionStringBulkUpdate.aspx page appears:

3. Complete the following details.

   Setting	Description
   Provider	This is a list of providers of mobile detection data currently implemented in the IRP, for example, Mobile Detect. Select the provider from which you downloaded the file that you are about to upload.
   Choose Data File	Browse for and select the file that you want to upload.

4. Click the Perform Bulk Update button to carry out the update.

To test user agent strings, follow these steps:

1. Go to Server Management > Mobile Detection Strings in the IRP Admin left navigation menu.
2. Click the Test User Agent String button above the Search bar.
   The MobileDetectionStringTestUserAgent.aspx page appears:
   
3. Complete the following details:

   Setting	Description
   User Agent String	Enter the user agent string of the device that you want to test. The IRP automatically inserts the user agent string of the current device. You can determine the user agent of a device by visiting one of the many websites which will tell you what the user agent string of the current device is.

4. Click the Test User Agent String button to run the test.
